The all-new Mitsubishi L200 will arrive in UK showrooms this Summer – a pick-up truck with improved off-road technology, enhanced towing capability and two distinct model grades.

Soon available in ‘Titan’ and ‘Barbarian’ trims, the seventh-generation L200 builds on Mitsubishi’s long-standing reputation for rugged off-road performance, drawing on technology developed through decades of success in events such as the Dakar Rally.

Two different four-wheel-drive systems

One of the biggest differences between the two versions lies beneath the bodywork.

The entry-level ‘Titan’ uses Mitsubishi’s ‘Easy Select’ four-wheel-drive system, allowing drivers to switch between two-wheel and four-wheel drive while on the move at speeds of up to 62mph. For more demanding off-road conditions, a low-range gearbox and locking rear differential help maximise traction on mud, snow and loose surfaces.

The more expensive ‘Barbarian’ gains Mitsubishi’s advanced ‘Super Select 4WD-II’ system. Unlike many pick-ups, it can operate in full-time four-wheel drive on tarmac as well as off-road, making it particularly useful when towing or driving in poor weather. The system automatically varies power distribution between the front and rear axles depending on available grip.

Designed for towing and off-road use

Mitsubishi says the Barbarian has been specifically engineered to offer greater stability when towing, with its permanent four-wheel-drive system helping maintain traction under load.

Both models can tow up to 3,500kg, putting them on par with rivals such as the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max and Volkswagen Amarok. ‘Trailer Stability Assist’ is also fitted to help prevent trailer sway at higher speeds.

The Barbarian additionally introduces ‘Active Yaw Control’ tech to the L200 range for the first time. The system subtly brakes individual wheels and adjusts torque distribution to improve stability and grip when cornering on slippery surfaces.

Seven terrain modes

The flagship Barbarian model features seven selectable drive modes designed to optimise performance in different conditions.

Drivers can choose between ‘Normal’, ‘Eco’, ‘Gravel’, ‘Snow’, ‘Mud’, ‘Sand’ and ‘Rock’ settings, with the vehicle automatically adjusting throttle response, traction control and power delivery to suit the terrain.

Additional features fitted across the range include a hill descent control feature, hill start assist, traction control and electronic stability control.

Taking on the UK’s best-selling pick-ups

The new L200 enters one of the most competitive segments in the UK market, facing established rivals including the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, KGM Musso and Volkswagen Amarok.

While many competitors focus on lifestyle appeal, Mitsubishi appears to be leaning heavily on its off-road credentials. The availability of full-time four-wheel drive in the Barbarian could prove particularly attractive to buyers who regularly tow caravans, horseboxes or trailers, while the extensive terrain modes should appeal to those who venture further off the beaten track.

Mitsubishi has yet to confirm full UK pricing and specifications, but with first deliveries due this summer, more details are expected in the coming weeks. Interested? Check back soon!
