Volkswagen is celebrating three decades of its legendary California campervan with a new special edition.

Named the California 30 Years, it adds equipment and will be limited to 999 examples worldwide, with just 30 of them available in the UK.

Based on the range-topping California Ocean, the 30 Years features a full campervan layout with a sliding rear bench, side-mounted kitchenette and elevating roof bed. However, for this special edition, there’s some extra equipment on offer.

All models gain a numbered plaque on the B-pillar, marking out its limited status. In addition, full LED headlights, a removable towbar, contrast roof and wing mirrors all come as standard.

There’s also a new body colour on offer – an eye-catching Turmeric Yellow.

Inside, the cab has Volkswagen’s Discover Media Navigation Pro infotainment system, plus heated seats, cruise control and all-round parking sensors. App-Connect is also fitted, giving Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for smartphone connectivity.

The anniversary edition of the campervan comes with a choice of diesel engines, offering 150hp or 200hp. Both are mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox, and the latter is available with all-wheel drive as an option. Fuel economy ranges from 41.5mpg to 38.7mpg as you climb the range, with CO2 emissions of 179g/km to 224g/km.

The California 30 Years costs from £64,307 for the entry-level 150hp unit, rising to £70,629 for the range-topping 200hp model with all-wheel drive.

Although Volkswagen campervans have been around in one form or another since the 1950s, 1988 saw the introduction of the first Volkswagen-approved conversion. The original California was based on the rear-engined T3 Transporter and built by Westfalia.

Since 2004, Volkswagen itself has been responsible for the California conversions at a dedicated factory in Limmer, Germany. The latest T6 model sold 15,155 units worldwide in 2017.
