Deutsche Post DHL and Ford have unveiled a jointly-produced electric delivery van, the StreetScooter WORK XL. 150 pre-production examples are expected to be in use by the end of the year.

Based on the Ford Transit chassis, the WORK XL has been designed to Deutsche Post DHL’s specification. The WORK XL joins the WORK and WORK L e-vans built by StreetScooter at its plant in Aachen.

Fitted with an electric drivetrain, the WORK XL relies on a modular battery system which delivers between 30kWh and 90kWh of power. It has a range of 50-125 miles, a charging capacity of up to 22kWh and an average charging time of three hours.

The e-van has a load volume of 20m3 and stowage space for over 200 parcels. It’s claimed that each e-van could save five tonnes of CO2 and 1,900 litres of diesel each year.

The WORK XL will be used by Deutsche Post DHL to deliver parcels in Germany, with plans to build 2,500 of the e-vans by the end of 2018.
