UK prices and full specification for the new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter have been unveiled – first examples of the new model will appear in June priced from £24,350 plus VAT.
Mercedes-Benz claims that the new Sprinter will be a “game-changing” van, having undergone re-engineering and improvements in several areas.
The range of vehicles available is significantly expanding, with front-wheel-drive versions on offer for the first time, while the Sprinter will also debut a nine-speed automatic gearbox.
Sprinter model choices will continue to be based around three wheelbases, four vehicle lengths, three roof heights, and chassis, chassis crew cab and Tourer variants. An all-new Tractor Head chassis will also be available, specifically designed for motorhomes.
Powertrain choices again range across four-cylinder and V6 turbocharged diesel engines. Rear-wheel-drive versions will use a seven-speed automatic transmission while the new front-wheel-drive models get the nine-speed unit.
Auto braking tops safety spec
Safety is a strong element in the new Sprinter – autonomous braking is standard to help prevent rear-end collisions and includes pedestrian protection. The van can also be fitted with the Attention Assist drowsiness detection already available on its Vito sister model. This helps prevent fatigue and encourages drivers to drive responsibly with breaks when they get tired.
Other safety features on offer include the Mercedes-Benz Emergency Call system and Rear Cross Traffic and Exit Alert, monitoring behind the van and autonomously braking if a collision looks likely.
Mercedes-Benz claims that the new Sprinter will be the most connected van yet. The brand will launch Mercedes PRO connect in June 2018 with 18 different services available at launch. The communication module will be offered as standard to buyers and offers rapid data transmission between vans, drivers and vehicle managers.
Standard specification has been improved over the outgoing Sprinter and includes a 7-inch touchscreen multimedia system with DAB radio (for the first time in the model), Active Brake Assist, Attention Assist, automatic headlights, Keyless Start, electrical power steering, and an adjustable multi-function steering wheel with touch control buttons. A 10.2-inch touchscreen will also be available and both versions will offer navigation and live traffic updates as an option.
Mercedes is also simplifying the Sprinter naming process. Vehicle length will no longer be referred to as Short to Extra-Long, but will instead be known as L1 to L4, vehicle height will be H1 to H3 and FWD, RWD and AWD will all appear in the description. So, for example, the current Sprinter 314CDI panel van medium will become the Sprinter 314CDI panel van L2H2 RWD.
