Ford has announced a package of updates for the electric version of the UK’s best-selling light commercial vehicle, the Transit Custom.

Versions of the E-Transit Custom produced from early 2026 will offer a 10% improvement in range and faster charging, while the vehicle will also be available with an all-wheel-drive powertrain for the first time.

The one-tonne van now gets a 71 kWh battery pack, replacing the previous 64 kWh unit, which boosts the maximum official range between charges to 232 miles.

Recharging using a 125 kW DC fast charger will now take around 29 minutes, 10 minutes faster than previously – a 10-minute charge will add up to 69 miles of range.

Owners of existing Ford E-Transit models with the 64 kWh pack will receive an over-the-air update which will cut the 10-80% recharge time from 39 to around 25 minutes.

Ford is also adding the battery pack upgrade to the E-Tourneo Custom people carrier, which uses the same drivetrain as the E-Transit Custom. Again an over-the-air update will improve charge times for versions already on the road.

Meanwhile an all-wheel-drive model will join the E-Transit range in early 2026, adding an additional motor to the front axle. It will be available with 100 kW, 160 kW, or 210 kW power outputs dependent on the trim level specified.

The intelligent AWD system allows the front and rear axles to operate independently or in tandem, the electronics analysing wheel slip up to 50 times per second. With the most powerful 210 kW powertrain the system will deliver torque levels of 630 Nm, a 50% increase on the rear-wheel-drive E-Transit.

All of the E-Transit body styles, Van, Kombi, Double-cab-in-van and MultiCab, will be available in AWD format, as will the E-Tourneo Custom.
