Volkswagen has taken the wraps off the all-new version of its big-selling Caddy van.
The fourth-generation model promises more economy and lower emissions from new engines, and increased safety systems.
It replaces the Mk3 model which in 11 years clocked up more than 1.5 million sales around the globe.
Power for the new Caddy comes form a trio of 2-litre four cylinder diesel engines, all EU6 emissions compliant and with power outputs of 74, 101 and 148bhp. The most efficient version, the Caddy Blue Motion panel van, offers combined cycle fuel economy figures of 70mpg-plus, and is targeted at inner city delivery firms who may face emissions restrictions.
New safety features include many not previously common in the van market, such as the ‘Front Assist’ surroundings monitoring system, including City Emergency Braking – this automatically applies the brakes If the driver fails to see an obstacle below a speed of 19mph).
Passenger-carrying versions also come fitted with side and curtain airbags.
Acoording to VW around 22 per cent of all accidents involving injuries are collisions with more than one obstacle so the Caddy now comes as standard with the Multi-collision Brake System. After a collision, it automatically initiates braking if the driver is no longer able to take action.
Options include ‘Light Assist’ and ‘Driver Alert’, the latter recognising any deviations from normal driving behaviour and recommending to the driver when a break is necessary.
Adaptive cruise control is also now on the options list.
The new Caddy is instantly recognisable as an evolution of its predecessor but its body has sharper folds and clearly defined surfaces. Redesigned front and rear profiles with new-look of front and rear lights add to the more distinctive looks of the new model.
The interior has also been refreshed with more distinctive looks, decorative trims with integrated air vents and new infotainment equipment.
The first Mk4 Caddy vans will go on sale in Germany in June. UK examples will arrive later in the year.
