Figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that van registrations rose by just under 2% in June, the first increase since January. A total of 37,349 new LCVs hit UK roads last month.
The market’s growth was driven by booming pick-up sales, which were up 14% to 4,820 units. By contrast, sales of commercial 4x4s plummeted 76% – although that is the smallest market segment so its impact on the overall market was not significant.
Demand for smaller vans (weighing less than 2.0 tonnes) rose 2%, while for mid-size vans (2.0-3.5 tonnes) it rose 30%. The large van segment (2.5-3.5 tonnes) saw a 5% drop in demand.
Overall, year-to-date registrations are down nearly 4%, with a total of 184,926 new vans registered in 2017.
