Toyota has announced that a new high-performance ‘GR Sport’ version of its highly-regarded Hilux pickup is now available to order in the UK, which the brand says is the “best-driving Hilux yet, on and off-road.”

This range-topper makes use of the same 200hp 2.8-litre diesel engine that features in the standard Hilux range. While the ‘GR Sport II’ doesn’t offer a boost in power, Toyota says the model comes with several mechanical upgrades that improve the driving experience.

The pickup’s stance has been widened and the ride height raised. The handling characteristics have also reportedly been improved, thanks to a reduced roll angle and more precise steering response. There is also less noise and vibration, and the suspension and brakes have been revised.

Toyota adds that the ‘GR Sport II’ has improved aerodynamics thanks to a new bumper and fog lamp design that reduces the air turbulence over the wheel arches – exterior alterations that should slightly improve fuel efficiency. The brand has also fitted lighter 17-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tyres.

Finally, the model comes with an eight-inch touchscreen that runs the brand’s latest infotainment software. Compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the system has cloud-based journey navigation, which uses real-time traffic event information for route planning. A premium nine-speaker JBL sound system is also included.

Now available to order, the Toyota Hilux GR Sport II is priced at just under £50k, with the first customer orders set to arrive later this year.
