Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled its new California – the latest version of its camper variant of the Transporter and according to its makers the only factory-built camper van on the market.
The new California, the fourth model to bear the name, is based on the latest Transporter T6 van. It is available in two forms; Beach and Ocean, the latter replacing the current SE model.
Like its predecessor the California can sleep four occupants courtesy of its pop-up roof, which is electro-hydraulically powered on Ocean models. It neatly integrates a 1.2m x 2m double bed.
Ocean models also come with a fully-equipped kitchen, including a 42-litre refrigerator, twin-burner hob and stainless steel sink unit. New features to the Ocean include a dimmable LED lighting system for the pop-up roof and tailgate and a clever multi-functional holder for the rear compartment that incorporates a cup, ashtray and towel holder all in one.
Major mechanical improvements to the California include a new range of engines that are up to 15 per cent more fuel efficient than their predecessors.
Both diesel and petrol units are available, with power ranging from the 101bhp 2.0-litre TDI diesel to the 201bhp 2.0 TSI petrol unit. Twin-clutch DSG gearboxes are also on offer, as is 4Motion all-wheel-drive.
A range of new technology also forms part of the new California line-up. A Driver Alert System is standard on all models, alerting the driver if the vehicle strays from its normal path on the road, while Brake Assist and an Automatic Post-Collision Braking System can also be specified.
Brake Assist adds another layer of security by registering the speed at which the brake pedal is pressed. During emergency braking, it ensures full brake pressure is applied more quickly.
The Automatic Post-Collision Braking System triggers braking after a collision, with the aim of preventing a second impact. After a short delay, the vehicle begins a phased braking action down to 6mph, during which the driver can take control at any time.
UK prices and a full specification for the new California will be announced closer to its showroom launch later this year.
