Fiat is celebrating the 35th birthday of its large Ducato van, currently in its sixth generation and sold in more than 80 countries around the world.
More than five million have been built since the first vehicle rolled off the production line in October 1981, and Fiat claims to have produced more than 10,000 variants of the model in that time.
Much of it’s success has come from its domination of the campervan niche. Two-thirds of all motorhomes sold in Europe are based on the Ducato, which is currently available in five wheelbases, six different chassis lengths and four engine options.
The Ducato has been sold in North America since 2013 under the RAM brand, which was spun off from Dodge under Fiat’s ownership of the Chrysler Group. This highly decorated Fiat model is currently built in factories in Italy, Mexico and Brazil.
