Volkswagen has unveiled a new officially-warrantied refrigeration conversion for its Luton-bodied Crafter large van.

The conversion, carried out by one of Volkswagen UK’s official partners, The Cold Consortium Ltd, is based on the existing ‘Engineered to Go’ Luton body produced by Ingimex, the UK’s largest manufacturer of commercial vehicle bodies.

In the refrigerated version, the load space can be chilled to 0oC and is maintained by a temperature-controlled multi-strip curtain fitted to the rear shutter. The compartment is formed from pressure-bonded insulation panels, which offer maximum strength while reducing weight.

The refrigeration system evaporator is mounted on a strengthened version of the van’s bulkhead panel. Motion-activated infrared (PIR) sensor lighting replaces the standard load bay lighting.

The conversion is the latest from York-based The Cold Consortium Ltd, which has specialised in producing chiller and freezer versions of vans for more than 20 years.

As with all work carried out by Volkswagen’s 21 commercial vehicle partners, the conversion includes a warranty matching that of the van itself, and can be ordered directly through a Volkswagen dealership.

The new vehicle will join the growing range of Volkswagen LCV conversions that include car transporters, cranes, minibuses and mobile workshops, alongside vehicles with specialist racking, refrigeration, welfare and wheelchair access.
