Full details have been released of the latest version of the one major pick-up seemingly not appearing at last week’s Commercial Vehicle Show, the Volkswagen Amarok.
While the new Amarok, on UK sale before the end of 2016, is a facelift, the changes are significant, led by a new engine.
The 3.0-litre V6 diesel unit replaces the twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel of the current Amarok and will be available with either 161, 201 or 221bhp, combined with an eight-speed auto transmission and rear or 4Motion all-wheel-drive.
While the least powerful version matches its predecessor for output, VW says that as well as being Euro 6 emissions compliant, the new engines are more efficient than their predecessors.
The range-topping 221bhp version will go on sale first. It offers 406lbft of torque – 96lbft improved over its predecessor and available from just 1500rpm – while returning combined cycle fuel economy figures of around 37mpg and CO2 emissions of 199g/km.
Other changes to the Amarok include a new more precisely reacting Servotronic steering system, 17-inch disc brakes on the front axle with 16-inch versions at the rear, and safety upgrades including an Automatic Post-Collision Braking system, included as standard on all versions.
Visually the Amarok is distinguished from its predecessor by a revised front end designed to look more sporty, and interior changes including a completely new dashboard.
Launch versions will be sold as the Amarok Adventura and include a body-coloured sports styling bar extending from behind the cabin over the load bay, 20-inch wheels and a Park Distance Control driver aid with a rear-view camera. However VW is yet to confirm whether UK buyers will be offered the Adventura.
